Parents' Club Chairs Report - Back to Top

As we head to the finish line of another successful school year, I would like to thank my fellow Parent Board volunteers for their commitment and time to Georgetown Prep.  Our community and our boys are fortunate to have so many dedicated and caring parents.  There are too many individuals to thank by name but I would like to say a special thank you to our “retiring” Co-Chair Terri Smith.  Terri has been actively involved with the school since 2001 and served Prep in so many ways over the past 11 years.  Terri, you will be missed.

The Gala on May 5th will kick off our final month of activities.  Our spring sports teams look to finish strong, our boys are studying hard for both AP and final exams, and of course we have our Class of 2012 graduating on May 26th.  Congratulations to our graduating seniors and their parents!

This is the last report for the year.  If anyone has suggestions or questions concerning the Parents' Club, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.  We look forward to seeing everyone in August.  Have a safe and wonderful summer!  Steve Spencer

Senior Class Parents - Class of 2012

Mary Strittmatter - strittmd@aol.com
Austin St. John - stbowditch@aol.com

It is hard to believe that in a few short weeks, we will be parents of Georgetown Prep graduates!  Through all of their in-class and extracurricular experiences here at Prep, our boys have matured, and our hope is that they are well on their way to becoming Men for Others.  We wish all of them the best as they finish up papers and exams, and we congratulate them on their graduation.

By now, everyone should have the invitations, tickets, and announcements for our sons’ graduation events on May 25th and May 26th.  Thanks for the hard work of the networking chairs from freshman and sophomore years -- and for all the hosts of our parent socials.  It has been nice getting to know many of you over these last two years, and we have enjoyed serving as networking co-chairs.  We look forward to future “Past Parent” events!

Hoya Saxa!

Junior Class Parents - Class of 2013

Joda Coolidge - sandjcoolidge@verizon.net
Gail Plamondon - pplamondon@aol.com

I believe we are all in shock that our boys are almost done with their junior year.  Gail and I appreciate all the support we have gotten throughout the year from all of you.  We still have a few more fun events planned for May, so hope some of you can join us.  There will be no more formal meetings for our class the rest of this year.

PROM HIGHTLIGHTS:  Hopefully, all of your guys had a great time at the Prom and enjoyed the amazing job that the Post Prom committee did in creating a successful party for our boys and their dates.  A special shout out to Donna Leanos, a parent in our class, who was one of the co-chairs of that party.  The juniors and seniors I talked to the next day all said they had a terrific time. We were notified that we are missing one very nice Adolpho tuxedo jacket.  Someone must have mistakenly taken it from the Marriott.  Please, if you don't mind, take a quick look to see if you have a jacket with George Melby's name on the inside label and a Marriott business card in the inside pocket.  Since the Melbys' own the tux, they'd be most grateful if it was returned.  If by some chance you find you have it, please contact Louise Melby at l.melby@verizon.net.  You will make her one very happy mother!

LADIES WINE AND CHEESE NIGHT:  Kassi Shott, mother of Tommy, has kindly offered to host a girls night out on May 9th (Wednesday) from 7:00 - 9:30 p.m.  Her home is a beautiful place to gather for a glass of wine or two.  We will collect a small donation that night to help Kassi supply the beverages and light finger food for the night.  Our last wine event proved to be a lot of fun. Come join us for laughs and friendship as we steel ourselves for AP and final exams.  Please RSVP to Kassi by May 7th, so she knows how much food to get.  Hope to see you there!  Kassi's email is kassishott@aol.com

POST MOTHER'S DAY TREAT at the GOODSTONE INN in scenic Middleburg, VA May 16th (Wednesday) 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. If you would like to enjoy a mini- retreat away from your normal routine for a day, come join us on May 16th at the Goodstone Inn in Middleburg, Virginia (www.goodstone.com).  Escape to a place seemingly untouched by time, where pristine pastures gently roll past breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  This quaint luxury inn is surrounded by 265 unspoiled acres in Virginia's Hunt and Wine Country.  Special arrangements have been made to have a private 90 minute guided hike with Randall Monday, the Property Manager, who has been working for Goodstone for 10 years.  He will share with us the history of this beautiful property and stories of times gone by.  After our nature escape, we will treat ourselves to a beautifully prepared three course lunch served in their beautiful dining room overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains.  After lunch, we will have a chance to see one of the luxurious rooms at the Goodstone.  Cost is $58.00 and includes all expenses for the day (lunch, gratuity, tax, and guided hike).  If you have the time to shop afterwards, Middleburg is a mecca of cute little boutiques.  Please RSVP to Joda (sandjcoolidge@verizon.net) and send checks, made out to Joda Coolidge, at 658 Nalls Farm Way, Great Falls, Va. 22066 by May 10th.  For a relaxing and fun day, come join us at the Goodstone.

Have a wonderful month of May!  Warmly, Gail and Joda

Sophomore Class Parents - Class of 2014

Joan McGuire joanpmcg@verizon.net

Wes and Robyn Kam -  wes.robyn@verizon.net

Can you believe our sons are at the end of their Sophomore year?  Where has the time gone?  We would like thank all the parents who supported the sport teams, attended the networking meetings and socials, and helped with Post Prom.  It has been a privilege serving as your Parent Networking representatives during our boys Freshmen and Sophomore years.  We are excited to announce that we have a wonderful group of women coming in to be our Junior and Senior Networking representatives:  Andrea Taylor, Diane Terpeluk, and Stacy Carr.  We know they will do an exceptional job representing our class.

We would also like to give a special thanks to Mr. Patrick Gallagher, Director of College Counseling, who spoke at our April Networking meeting.  Mr. Gallagher did a tremendous job answering all of our questions about how we, together with Prep, can help prepare our boys for the college application process.

Have a fun and memorable summer!

Freshmen Class Parents - Class of 2015

Melissa Aitken - theaitkens@verizon.net
Connie Dierman - thediermans@aol.com

It is really hard to believe, but we are fast approaching the close of our freshman year at Prep!  It truly has been a wonderful year, with many new friendships made among the boys and parents.  We want to thank you for your remarkable support and enthusiasm this year.  We think the overwhelming turnout for the “Community of Concern” event really demonstrated the commitment we all have made to work together to make the Prep experience something our boys will always cherish.

A special thank-you goes to Mr. DeCaro for organizing a memorable freshman retreat for our sons April 25th, 26th, and 27th.  The boys were able to experience and see “God in All Things” as they hiked along the Appalachian Trail, and the weekend was capped off with a special Mass for freshmen and families.  Our last parent networking meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 1st.  As always, please come at 7:00 p.m. for socializing.  Our meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Figge Foyer, and our guest speakers will be Meg Frazier, Academic Dean, and Patrick Gallagher, Director of College Counseling.  You don’t want to miss this meeting!  Mrs. Frazier and Mr. Gallagher will talk with us about how and when to begin the college quest and how to keep our sons focused in the moment and be ready for a successful 10th grade.

As we look forward to next year, please feel free to share with us your ideas for networking events.  We hope to hold a parents’ social very early in the school year.  Networking meetings will resume in October, and will be held on the second Tuesday of each month for the sophomore class.

Garden Club

This spring, the GP Garden Club has focused on planting around campus.  Our main focus has been the front gates leading into campus, as well as the chapel garden and various containers around the grounds.  This month we will do flower arrangements for the Prep Gala during our last meeting of the school year.  We will also provide goody bags to the GP residents during exam week as a little extra stress relief for this group of students.

The Garden Club is pleased to welcome three new co-chairs for next school year, Stacy Carr, Ms. Paige Connelly, and Barbara Schuler, a very talented trio that we all look forward to working with in 2012-13.  Our club is a great group of parent volunteers and we welcome all to give us a try next year!  No gardening experience is necessary and joining the club is a great way to get to know other Little Hoya parents.

Our next meeting to arrange the Gala flowers will be on Friday, May 4th at 8:30 a.m. - we will meet at Boland Hall.  All are welcome to help us with this task!

In closing, I would like to thank my co-chairs, Linda O'Hare and Andrea Taylor, who I've really enjoyed working with for the last two years.  Both have been instrumental in the club's success and have been extremely dedicated co-chairs. Their creativity and hard work have been a blessing to the club and the school.  Thank you Linda and Andrea, and I know we will all be back to volunteer together next year under the new club management!!!!

Kind regards, Karen Baughman

Parents Council of Washington (PCW)

Parents Council of Washington presented its Spring Forum on April 18th featuring guest speaker, Andrea McCarren, a multimedia journalist with CBS affiliate WUSA 9 News.  Ms. McCarren shared compelling video and eye-opening accounts from her highly acclaimed series on underage drinking and drug use among local teens.  Ms. McCarren also discussed the backlash she and her family received from teens and parents.  Her series on teenage drinking addresses many of the consequences related with this behavior including health and legal issues as well as the impact on future plans for college and jobs.  A good example is the video: Underage Drinking & Social Media Warning.  You can view the numerous videos of Ms.McCarren’s news segments by going to www.wusa9.com or www.parentscouncil.org and clicking their Facebook link.

Also presented at the Spring Forum was a summary of the Student Leader Breakfast held at Georgetown Prep this past February. If you are interested in knowing the concerns of Junior and Senior High School students from area independent schools, you can access the summary of this informative event at www.parentscouncil.org  under “New from PCW” and click on “Notes from SLB.”

PCW presents its final Webinar on Wednesday, May 9th from 9:00 p.m. - 10 p.m. -  Productive Parenting: Giving Your Child the Rudder and the Oars.  Learn strategies for raising resilient children who are able to direct their own destinies and weather storms independently.  To register: http://dragonflylearning.org/transactions/SelfRegister.aspx.  Click “register” at top right hand corner. PCW Security Code: CA86V0Q (7th character is a zero).  Each webinar is recorded and archived within one business day of the live webinar and will be available until June 2012.  Once registered, you can log-in and click “Available Webinar Series” on Community-Connect to view this year’s previous webinars.

Good Luck to all your boys with exams!  We hope you enjoy a safe and relaxing summer!
