 April 2010

Dear Prep Parents,

I can hardly believe we are approaching graduation! Exciting things are happening at Prep. Our seniors are looking forward to graduation and our underclassmen are getting ready to assume new leadership roles. The Admissions Office has sent out acceptance letters to the Prep class of 2014, which promises to be a bright group of young men.

Over Spring Break, along with Gonzaga, Prep co-hosted the Jesuit Lacrosse Classic. The event benefited the Washington Jesuit Academy and showcased the lacrosse talent of several Jesuit high schools from around the country.

This year we are celebrating my final Gala at Prep. I hope you can join us on Saturday, May 1, 2010 in the Hanley Center. It promises to be a fun evening with live and silent auctions, a raffle for the chance to win a BMW 328i hardtop convertible, and dinner and dancing. I look forward to seeing you there.

It is my hope that this spring finds you and your families safe and happy.

Peace,

Rev. William L. George, S.J.

Bob Hetherington hetheringtonr@mcwilson.com

4/1/2010 - Welcome back from Spring Break! We hope you enjoyed the time with your families and that you had a nice Easter. April promises to be a busy month for us.

Soon after school re-opens on April 7th, it’s the Mother/Son Mass and brunch which will be held on Sunday, April 11, at 11:00 a.m. Please plan to attend this special event with your son(s).

On Monday, April 12, Bob Hetherington, Dean Rodriguez, and Lt. Hack will address parents and sons on the dangers and legal ramifications of alcohol and drug use during upcoming events such as prom, graduation, beach week and even college. This meeting is in lieu of our regular networking meeting and is mandatory for the boys. It will take place in Hanley at 7:00 p.m. Pizza dinner will be provided for the boys prior to the meeting.

Next up is prom on Saturday, April 17th. Please help keep our boys safe by encouraging them to attend the alcohol-free post prom party in Hanley.

We are hopeful that we can get a host for one more parent party before the class of 2010 graduates! If you are so inclined, please e-mail us at pmlhall@aol.com.

3/1/2010 -

Happy Spring! We hope the boys enjoyed their Spring Break and are recharged and ready to finish out the school year.

This month’s networking event is Wednesday April 14 when we will have an important program for parents and sons: prom safety and the consequences of drinking and driving. Attorney Bob Hetherington and Lt. John Hack will address these issues at 7:00 pm in the Hanley Multipurpose room. Dean Rodriquez will send information to parents about expected mandatory attendance.

Join us on Friday April 16 at the home of Kathleen Merlo and Dan Ilisevich for our parent social. It would be great to see everyone that evening. Invitations were sent by mail. RSVP by April 8.

Other upcoming events include the Mother/Son Mass and Brunch on April 11 and the Junior/Senior Prom on April 17.

April 2010 - We hope all your boys (and you) had a fun Spring Break. It is hard to believe that we only have two months left of Freshman year. We were especially grateful for the incredible response to the Community of Concern evening on alcohol awareness. It was a wonderful evening with over 200 freshmen and parents attending. It was very informative and filled with valuable dialogue. A special thanks to Mimi Fleury and Dean Rodriguez for coordinating the meeting.

We would love to have one final parent social in May. If anyone would be willing to host this event please email Susan at bsyoung@mac.com.

Garden Club - April 2010

Spring starts a busy season for the GP garden club. We are meeting at 9am on Friday, April 9th at Boland Hall in order to do some planting, weeding and tidying up of the grounds. In May, we will work on the gala flower arrangements and sprucing up the campus for graduation. All prep parents are welcome to join the garden club at any time and Spring is a perfect season to begin with us - no experience necessary! Come join a fun group of parents and help freshen up the campus with flowers and greenery!

Parents Council of Washington

Georgetown Prep hosted the Parents’ Council Student Leader Breakfast on February 18, 2010. High school students from around the Washington DC area came to discuss issues that are of importance to them and their fellow students. A summary of the comments will be posted to the Parents’ Council of Washington website under “PCW Events,” “Recent Program Highlights.”

The Deans’ luncheon will be held on April 20. This program serves as a follow-up to the Student Leader Breakfast and allows Deans from various schools the opportunity to review and discuss the anonymous observations made by students.

The Parents’ Council complete its 2009-2010 year in May with a breakfast for representatives.

Post Prom! - Only 50 Days to Prom!

Post Prom Donation Form - Click here to print or download

There are less than fifty days until the Prom/POST PROM. The committee chairs are working hard to make sure that all the necessary arrangements have been made for the evening to be a real success. We have been planning a menu of pizza and other boardwalk type munchies so the boys and their dates will have the energy to be able to stay up all night.

We have made headway into the prize solicitation portion. However, we are looking to put together a few more combination prizes. If you have any new ‘re-giftable’ items appropriate for teens that you would like to donate, please contact one of the chairs. We will make spring cleaning easier for you. We can make use of that unused picture frame, the unopened bottle of perfume, cologne, body lotion, the unread book or unspent gift card. Your closet treasures can make someone else happy.

In addition, it you did not volunteer to chaperone this event back in September, don’t hesitate to do so now. We need several more parents for the late night shift. Please gather a few friends, send us an e-mail because we welcome your assistance.

Father Son Dinner

On Sunday March 7th Father George presided over his 10th and final Father Son Mass and Dinner as President of Georgetown Prep.  It was a beautiful day as the snowpocalypse finally receded.    This year’s caterer, High Point, was able to cut and grill the steaks outside.  The aroma of the broiling steaks and vegetables was a welcome reminder that Spring was just around the corner.

Our guest speaker this year was Wolfe Blitzer of CNN.  Mr. Blitzer gave an excellent talk.  He reminded our sons of high important a broad based classical education is and how well it will serve them over their lives.  Mr. Blitzer had some interesting anecdotes from his years covering events all around the globe.  He also provided some keen insights into the news and goings on in a variety of the worlds hot spots.

The Mass and Dinner were well attended.  The facility and table settings looked great and the caterer did a fine job.  It was terrific to get together as fathers and sons.  It also gave us an opportunity to thank Father George again for all he has done.  We hope to see him at the Father Son in the future.

Bikes for the World

Have a bike that’s out of use or in need of repair?  Rather than throwing it away, why not donate it to Bikes for the World?  On Saturday, April 10th 2010 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm bring any bikes behind the new library.  They will be refurbished and sent to individuals in need in Haiti and Costa Rica, helping with travel to school and work.  For more information email Matt Conaghan at mattc7878@aol.com or visit www.bikesfortheworld.com.

Donate Cameras!

The Georgetown Prep Photography Department is looking for a few good cameras. There are frequent occasions when students who take the Digital Photography course, as well as members of the Photography Club, need to borrow a working camera for projects.

If you have a good working digital camera of at least 5 megapixels (along with basic accessories such as battery, charger, memory card, etc.) that is not being used, please consider donating it to the GP Photography program. You can contact Gary Daum at 301-214-1216 or gldaum@gprep.org for more information.

Many people upgrade to a better camera and wonder what to do with an older but perfectly good camera--this is a worthwhile way to put it back into service!
