From the Office of the President

February 2012

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year!!  While my wishes for a blessed 2012 might be a bit tardy they are nonetheless sincere and heartfelt.  I pray that all in the Prep community enjoyed a wonderful holiday and that the New Year is off to a blessed start.

I want to take a moment to thank all of you for your kindness to me as I celebrated my 50th birthday at the end of November.  I was being a big baby about turning 50 (not believing anyone who would tell me that 50 is the “new 40”).  The kindness shown to me however, made the big event not so painful and in fact I found myself actually enjoying the whole experience—even the onset of receiving AARP information in the mail.

Turning 50 has also made me reflect on the passage of time and once again, I’m reminded of how quickly time passes us by.  As we begin the second semester of this year, I want to challenge myself and the entire community to avoid getting overly caught up in the busy nature that is our day-to-day experience at the expense of recognizing the gift that is each and every moment of our day.  Perhaps this challenge is most appropriate for our seniors and their families for whom this is their final semester at Prep.  Let us pledge to savor each day for the gift that it is and to live each day to the fullest.  One of my favorite movie quotes comes from Dead Poets Society—Carpe Diem!   Let us all “seize the day” and in doing so experience the joy that is God’s desire for us all!!

God Bless,

Fr. Michael J. Marco, S.J.

Parents' Club Chairs Report - Back to Top

Happy New Year to all from the Parents Board!  It is hard to believe that January is over!  The boys have survived their exams and have kicked off the second semester with a whirl of activity at Prep!

The winter sports teams are in full swing -- stop by to see a basketball game, a wrestling match, or a swim meet if you can, and the boys are preparing behind the scenes for the spring sports which are just around the corner.  Congrats to the Prep Players on a fabulous play, Fahrenheit 451 last weekend!  I hope you all got the chance to see it.

This Saturday, February 4th is our Past Parents Party in the George Center at 7:00 p.m.  It is a great way to reconnect with old Prep friends, so please try to make it.

Save the date for the Father - Son dinner  on March 4th.  Mass is at 5:00 p.m. with dinner to follow.

Our Post Prom Committee has been hard at work raising funds for a wonderful, safe night for our boys.  We appreciate all of your support.

Prep is starting a Mothers Club!  We have had one event and will be hosting another coffee in February, so be on the lookout for an invite.

Prep is a very busy place with so many events that succeed because of all of you!  Thank you so much for all that you continue to do for Prep!

We are entering the home stretch of our boys’ four years at Georgetown Prep!  Congratulations to those boys who have been accepted early to college, and good luck to those who await regular decisions.  We hope to see many of you at the various parent activities and at the boys’ events as we wind down our time at Prep with the class of 2012.  We plan to provide information on the upcoming graduation schedule of events as the information becomes available.

Andrea and Allen Taylor will be hosting a social in their home in March.  We are in the process of determining a date and will make that information available as soon as possible.

Any updates to email addresses should be sent to Austin at stbowditch@aol.com.

Happy New Year to the Class of 2013!  Hope everyone had a joyous and peaceful Christmas break. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Junior Parent College Night on January 19th!  As we turn the calendar to the new year, there are several events and dates we want to remind you about:

Junior Mothers' Coffee - Our next monthly mothers' social will take place on Thursday, February 2nd from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. at the Corner Bakery, 10327 Westlake Drive, Bethesda (behind Montgomery Mall).  Come join this informal gathering for as little or as long as you can!

Junior Class Family Mass - All juniors and their families are invited to attend mass in the Georgetown Prep Chapel on Sunday, February 12th at 12:00 p.m.  This annual family mass will be a culmination of the Kairos experience that all juniors will have attended by this date.  A light reception will follow.

Networking Meeting - Our February Networking Meeting will occur on Tuesday, February 21st beginning at 7:00 p.m. for a brief social time followed by a presentation at 7:30 p.m. in the Figge Foyer (Haas Building).  This meeting, geared specifically for women, will feature Adm. Sandra Kweder, M.D., a junior parent, as our speaker.  Sandy will speak about women's health and wellness issues, so we invite mothers from all classes to attend and bring a friend!

Looking forward to seeing you!  Please feel free to contact either of us with any questions or suggestions you may have!

Can you believe our boys are now in the second semester of their sophomore year?  Time sure is flying fast.  We want to thank Mr. John Krambuhl of Campus Ministry for speaking at our January Parents’ Networking meeting.  Mr. Krambuhl did an excellent job of fielding questions regarding the upcoming Sophomore Conversation and Sophomore Retreat.  There will be no meeting in February.

Coming in March a spring parents’ social, more details to follow.

Freshmen Class Parents - Class of 2015

Melissa Aitken - theaitkens@verizon.net
Connie Dierman - thediermans@aol.com

On Tuesday, December 6th, Headmaster Jeff Jones was the guest speaker at our monthly meeting.  The parents appreciated his insight on the leadership qualities of a Prep student.  He was kind enough to spend some time at the end of the meeting answering our questions.

The next  Freshmen Parents’ Networking meeting will be on Monday, February 6th.  (NOTE: THIS IS A CHANGE FROM OUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED DATE!)   Our guest speaker will be Prep Athletic Director, Dan Paro, who will give us an overview of Prep’s athletic programs.   Please let us know in advance if you have any specific topics you’d like Coach Paro to address.  We’d like this meeting to be as informational and insightful as possible.  Many parents have expressed an interest this topic and in having the opportunity to hear from Coach Paro, so we hope that we’ll have a good turnout.   Come at 7:00 p.m. for socializing and light refreshments before the meeting, which will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Figge Foyer.

Friday, February 24th is a Freshman Day of Service.  More details to follow.

We are working to set up our next Freshman Parent Social, sometime later this winter.  Again, more details will follow.   Finally, if you are not receiving emails from us regarding Freshman Networking Events, please let us know so we can be sure to add your email address to our lists!

Wishing you a Happy New Semester and New Year,

Garden Club

Greetings and Happy Winter!  During this frosty time of year, the GP Garden Club is on break.  We will return to do some spring planting around campus in April and look forward to working around the school again in warmer weather.  We will send out a reminder about our next meeting in the coming weeks and will wrap up the year by planting, cleaning up around campus, and assisting with flower arrangements for various Spring events.

Kind regards,

Parents Council of Washington (PCW)

Great News!  Parents Council of Washington is on Facebook.  This year’s Winter PCW Representative Forum opened with a demonstration on how to take full advantage of what PCW has to offer.  All you need to do is click the link (www.facebook.com/ParentsCouncilofWashington), “like” the page and you have instant access to all things PCW; webinars, articles relevant to raising children today and much more.  This demonstration was followed by information on how to host a webinar.  Webinars as you may know are like seminars but held through the internet.  Last year, PCW introduced a webinar series for its members.  There are 8 webinars aired once a month during the school year.

The next webinar, “Mollifying Video Game Ingestion to Combat Obesity and Diet Crisis” airs February 8th at 9:00 p.m.  A link to the PCW website along with downloadable instructions for the webinar can be found on the GP Parents page under the Parent’s Club heading.

Of particular interest to our Georgetown Prep community is the Student Leader Breakfast, which will be held, February 8th in the Hanley Center.  Upperclass students from PCW member high schools gather to discuss topics of interest to students in independent schools in the DC area.   Student comments are kept anonymous to encourage open and candid discussions.  This has been a well-attended event and is one of the highlights of the PCW calendar.  The follow-up to this event will be the Dean’s Luncheon in March that will give the school administrators the opportunity to learn about the issues the students discussed.

The next PCW Best Practices program will take place on March 1st at the National Presbyterian School.  The program will run from 9:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with a light breakfast at 8:30 a.m.  The topic will be “Encouraging Kindness in our Schools: A forum to share how schools cultivate kindness and respond to bullying."  Unlike other years, this program is open to all parents of PCW member schools.  A formal invitation will follow and we encourage you all to save the date!

Thank you, thank you, and thank you to all the families that contributed to the POST PROM donation request over the holidays.  We made a significant step towards reaching our budget for this extremely important event.  If you were unable to mail your contribution check because of the hectic rush of the Christmas season, please free to mail it now.  We will be accepting donations over the next several months.

Our congratulations go out to the raffle winners.  Jonathan and Sang-Mi McHale  won the limo ride on the night of the Prom for their son, his friends and their dates; Scott and Louise Melby won the tuxedo rental for their son; Dan Ilisevich and Kathleen Merlo won the$150 restaurant certificate to Seasons 52, and Christopher and Maria Bowers won the $150 restaurant certificate to Capital Grille.

We are presently soliciting prizes to raffle off in order to encourage the young men and ladies to stay the entire evening at the POST PROM.  If you have anything or any connections to obtain items that you know the students like (concert tickets, CDs, specialty T-shirts, etc) please request a donation from the individual or appropriate organization.  We are willing to pick up those items if it is more convenient for you.  Just contact us as soon as possible.  Attached is the necessary donation request paperwork.   Just a reminder, there are only 81 days until the prom!
