November 2011

Dear Friends,

I apologize for missing the last issue of the Prep Post but am grateful that my assistant Sonja Roberts was able to introduce herself to the parent community.  Sonja has been a great addition to the Prep community and a tremendous help to me personally.  If you haven’t had the chance to meet her in person I hope you will be able to do so soon.

The reason I missed writing for the last edition was due to a very heavy travel schedule that took me to Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Cleveland, San Francisco, San Diego, L. A., and Phoenix.  I’ve definitely piled up the frequent flyer miles.  While some of this travel has been for personal reasons (a wedding of a former student), the primary reason for my travel was to visit with our alumni community across the country.  This has been a great experience as I’ve met so many of our very generous and supportive alums who continue to hold Prep in high regard.

While these trips do take me away from the school and therefore away from some of the day-to-day activities that take place on campus, they are very important for me and the future of Prep.  Our alumni love this school and their continued support is vital to our continued success.  It is imperative that I meet with as many of our extended alumni as possible in order to keep those bonds of affection strong and to thank them for all they continue to do to support the young men who currently grace the hallowed halls of Prep.  It is inspiring to see the depth of love and care that these men have for their alma mater!

I’m glad to be home for awhile now and look forward to the remainder of the first semester.  As always, thank you for all you do for our young men and may God continue to bless us all most abundantly!

Peace,

Fr. Michael J. Marco, S.J.

Parents' Club Chairs Report - Back to Top

Hello everyone:

Happy November!  We all know that colder days are around the corner, but let’s just hope that we don’t have a repeat of last winter!

A HUGE thanks to all of you who volunteered at the Open House!  It was a beautiful day with close to 1000 people wandering around campus seeing what Prep has to offer.  The boys did a wonderful job representing our school and I hope they enjoyed their late arrival the next day!

The Fall sports teams are winding down after a successful season, and the Fall Musical is coming up on November 11th.  Parent-Teacher conferences are on November 10th and 11th, and they present a great opportunity to speak to your son's teacher in a one-on-one setting.  Please sign up if you have not already.

The campus is in full Fall motif -- the Garden Committee did a fantastic job of decorating every corner of the school!  The Tuesday networking meetings are in full swing.  Topics range widely so please do your best to attend these invaluable sessions.  The Parent Board is focused on making sure that the resident students, and parents, are as involved with the Prep community as the “locals." Please be reminded that, while Prep does a great job taking care of these young men, there is nothing like a home cooked meal, night at the movies, or just a day out with a family to help pass the time for those with families far away.

The end of a marking period is here.  We are amazed at the way Prep’s young men handle the many responsibilities that today’s youth face.  They are certainly building a great foundation for any/all of life’s future challenges.  This is the time of the year for giving thanks, so we want to thank all of the teachers, parents, staff, and students for all that you do to make Prep the special place that it is.  Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

Senior Class Parents - Class of 2012

Mary Strittmatter - strittmd@aol.com
Austin St. John - stbowditch@aol.com
We are off to a great start to the year!  The boys are busy getting ready for the next phase of their lives -- both exciting and scary!

Our first Senior Social will be held on Saturday, November 12th at the home of Mary and Steve Fairbanks. The cost will be $25.00 per person.  Look for your evite online.  We hope you are able to join us!

There was a great turnout for the Senior Mass held on October 9th.  Thank you to our guest speaker, Alex Scarzinski '11, who gave an enlightening talk on the stress of college applications.

Note that there will be no networking meetings in either November or December as our dates fall during school breaks. We will restart in January. Please let us know if you have any suggestions for future parent get-togethers. An early Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Any updates to email addresses should be sent to Austin at stbowditch@aol.com.

Junior Class Parents - Class of 2013

Joda Coolidge - sandjcoolidge@verizon.net
Gail Plamondon - pplamondon@aol.com
We want to express our thanks and appreciation to Meg Frazier and Patrick Gallagher who came to speak to us on Networking Night about college testing and navigating through the academic process for the boys' junior year.  The session was incredibly well attended, and the information was entertaining and informative.

The first group of boys attended Kairos and reports from faculty, facilitators, families, and students was that it was a very impactful experience for them.  We are looking forward to all of the boys' having a similar experience over the next several months.  For the months of November and December, there will not be networking meetings. However, there will be several social events, including:

Junior Moms' Night Out - Our first event will be hosted by Betsy Ring, 5011 Nahant Street, Bethesda, on Thursday, November 3rd beginning at 7:30 p.m.  Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served as well as wine, beer, and sodas.  A contribution of $10 - 15 per person (payable that evening) would be appreciated to cover the cost of the food and drinks.  Please RSVP to Gail Plamondon at pplamondon@aol.com.  It is not too late to RSVP for this event.  Hope you can join us for a fun evening of conversation at this kick off event!

Afternoon Tea at Strathmore - What better way to ease our way into the Christmas season than to enjoy an Afternoon Tea in the Music Room at Strathmore!  A light lunch of delectable tea savories, sweets, and the Strathmore Blend Tea will be served as the soothing sounds of a local harpist fill the holiday decorated room. Please join us on Tuesday, December 6th at 1 p.m. for this popular tea!  In order to reserve this date, we need payment by November 7th.  The cost is $23 per person.  Please make your check payable to Joda Coolidge and send it to Joda Coolidge, 658 Nalls Farm Way, Great Falls, VA 22066.  We have had a very nice response from the Prep Moms.  However, it's still not too late to attend if you'd like.  We spoke to the folks as the Strathmore the other day and there are still a few seats available for our group.

Holiday Boutique and Champagne Brunch - Also, please don't forget about the Holiday Boutique and Champagne Brunch, which will be held on Sunday, November 13th from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Columbia Country Club at 7900 Connecticut Ave., Chevy Chase.. If you'd like to attend, please RSVP by November 5th.  If you have any questions, call 301-214-1221.  Remember, all proceeds from this event go to the Prep Scholarship Fund.

Mock SAT - The College Counseling Office will be offering a MOCK SAT I on Sunday, November 20th from 9 – 1pm for juniors.  It will be held in the Hanley Multi-Purpose Room.  The mock tests at Prep prepare the students for the real tests by helping them become accustomed to the structure and pace of the tests.  The mock tests also indicate a student’s strengths and weakness on each test.  The mock tests are scored, but the results are not recorded outside of Prep.  Instead, each student (and his college counselor) receives a detailed diagnostic evaluation of his strengths and weaknesses, which allows him and his college counselor to make informed decisions about test preparation and which test better reflects his strengths.

Please feel free to contact either Joda or Gail if you have any questions!

Sophomore Class Parents - Class of 2014

Joan McGuire joanpmcg@comcast.net

Wes and Robyn Kam -  wes.robyn@comcast.net

Our first networking meeting for the year was held last month with Headmaster Jeff Jones as guest speaker.  Jeff gave a powerful talk in which he explained the focus of the sophomore conversation, the foundation being built to develop men for others, and how their new freedoms come with opportunities for maturity and experimentation.  If you missed the meeting, be sure to pick up a handout at our next meeting on Wednesday, November 16th from 6:45 - 8:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of the Hanley Center.  Chris Rodriguez will be sending out a letter announcing this parent-student discussion night sponsored by the Community of Concern.  The conversations will be about the negative effects of drugs and alcohol, and the factors that affect the decision making of teenage drivers.  How relevant and timely for our class!

Also, we hope all of you can join us for our first Parent’s Social on Saturday, November 12th from 10:00a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  It will be a fun pot-luck brunch held in the George Center at Prep.  You will receive an Evite with the details.  This coincides with the Resident Parent’s Weekend for all to enjoy.

Freshmen Class Parents - Class of 2015

Melissa Aitken - theaitkens@verizon.net
Connie Dierman - thediermans@aol.com
Freshmen year is off to an excellent, but busy, start!  We are all finally adjusting to new schedules, and faces and names are now becoming increasingly familiar.  Our first freshmen parent networking meeting was held on October 4th, and the turnout was incredible.  Our sincere appreciation goes to Mr. Williams, Ms. Frazier, Mrs. Gribbin, Mrs. Knapp, and Mr. Rodriguez for joining us and sharing important information on the freshman platform – and for answering many parent questions.  Parents left the meeting with a much better understanding on how to better work with their sons and Prep through this new phase in life.

Thanks to the incredible hospitality of Gretchen and Jack Alexander, our parent social on October 15th was loads of fun and a great success.  We had a terrific crowd, and it was wonderful to get to meet each other in such a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere!  We definitely can see a strong class spirit emerging, and we look forward to scheduling another parent social event for late January or early February.

Our next parent networking meeting will be on Tuesday, November 1st.  We are fortunate to have Father Marco join us as our guest speaker.  Father will talk about the school year and the initial plan to move forward with a Strategic Planning process.  He is also very interested in hearing from parents on any questions or issues that he might be able to address.  As a reminder, the meeting will be held in the Figge Foyer (Haas Building).  Come at 7:00 p.m. for socializing and light refreshments before the meeting, which will start at 7:30 p.m.

Finally, if you are not receiving emails from us regarding Freshman Networking Events, please let us know so we can be sure to add your email address to our lists!

We would like to thank the Garden Club for providing the resident students with Halloween treats.  We would also like to thank Mary Patrick for sending the very delicious food over as well.  The boys always enjoy the extra goodies.  It makes it feel more like home.  We are in the process of setting up a schedule for weekly baked goods to be delivered to the resident students.  If you are interested in being added to the list please email Judy at itsokay317@yahoo.com.

We are also in the process of making exam survival bags for the boys.  If you are interested in donating any items (healthy snacks, bottles of water, gatorade, stress squeeze balls, etc.) please contact Judy as well.  We look forward to the fall Resident Family Weekend.  Thank you to the Sophomore class and the Senior class for scheduling their fall socials on the same weekend.  The resident parents appreciate it.  We hope everyone has a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving!

Garden Club

October was a great month for the club and we have been busy.  Our members spruced up the campus for fall with plantings and scarecrows and did some gardening at Gunlocke Hall.  Thanks to the efforts of co-chair Andrea Taylor we will have two crepe myrtles added to this area, which will make the building look nice for the resident students who spend so much time there!

In November the Garden Club will work on projects related to our Christmas Decorating Day at GP.  We will meet at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, November 4th in Figge Foyer.  We plan to make student ornaments, plant some bulbs at the front gates, and plan for the season ahead.  Please join us if you are interested - we encourage all to give our club a try and meet other Little Hoya parents while making a contribution to the school at the same time.  All are welcome and no gardening experience is necessary!

For questions, please contact any of the co-chairs listed below.  Hope to see you on November 4th!!

Parents Council of Washington (PCW)

The Parents Council of Washington hit the ground running this year.  As as your PCW reps, we have been busy going to meetings, advertising programs, and eating excellent refreshments!  Our first order of business was to advertise the start of this year’s webinar series, Teens and Alcohol Use; Implications on Mind and Body, which ran on October 3rd at 8:00 p.m.  We hope you saw our notice in the Daily Announcements and were able to watch this informative webinar.  If not, all webinars are archived on the PCW website accessed by clicking the link on the Parents' Page under “Parents' Club.”  While you’re there take a look around to see all the PCW has to offer.

Our second order of business was to attend the Fall Representative Orientation held at the National Cathedral School on October 4th.  This year’s speaker was, Katherine Koestner, a national expert on student safety and wellness.  She gave a very interesting and eye-opening presentation on the safety issues our children face in today’s ever-increasing technological world.  Ms. Koestner stressed the importance of knowing and discussing what your child is doing “online.”  Many parents communicate with their children about acceptable behavior outside of the home, but say surprisingly little when it comes to online activity.  Ms. Koestner suggests that parents should actively communicate and clearly define acceptable online behavior.  Of particular note, a handout accompanying the presentation reported that between 21% and 26% of colleges and universities use search engines and social networking sites in some manner during the admissions process.

The next item on the agenda is the Fall Speakers Program.  No doubt you have seen the information in the Daily Announcements about the program titled "Raising Successful Learners."  This event will be held on Wednesday, November 2nd at the National Cathedral School in Washington.  Refreshments are served at 6:30 p.m. followed by the speaker from 7 to 9 p.m.  All are invited to attend.

And finally, Georgetown Prep will once again be hosting the Student Leader Breakfast in February.  It will be held in the Hanley Center on February 8th.  We will have more information on this event as we get closer to the date.

Telephone Committee

Did you know that Prep has a Telephone Tree?  It is hard to believe with today’s technology that there would ever be use for a telephone tree but that’s what happened on Back-to-School Night.  With the torrential rains and power outages, people needed to be notified quickly that Back-to-School Night was cancelled.  Of course emails were sent out too but once the decision was made, Prep wanted to make sure that everyone was notified, and didn’t fight traffic and flooding to get to school.  Your safety was the main concern.  We are looking into other options that might make the phone tree obsolete but for now, the phone tree is the best way to get a message around quickly when there is a limited amount of time to notify people.  Please look in the Prep Student Directory on page 62 to find out how the phone tree works and who you would need to call if an urgent issue arises.  For the most part, you will call four or five people to let them know of the urgent message.  It is a good idea to have those numbers handy in case you don’t have easy access to the directory.  Thanks for your patience with this notification process.

Post Prom Committee

As of Halloween, there are 173 days until the Prom.  The Post Prom Committee Chairs Donna Leanos, Linda Peters, Lisa Gottshall, and Olga Santos have been hard at work organizing the list of volunteers, brainstorming decorating ideas, finding restaurant donations for the raffle, and attending the Montgomery County Project Prom/Graduation meetings.  On  April 21, 2012, the Hanley Center will be transformed into an amazing celebration for the junior and senior boys and their dates.  There will be  food, music, prizes and lots of entertainment as the,

”Hoya Stars Shine Bright”

The Post Prom would not be possible without contributions from the parents.  We need support from every family at Prep.  Please look for a letter requesting a donation to arrive in the mail the first week in November.  We would like to raise funds as early as possible in order to budget wisely.  If you could return your contribution before the upcoming holidays, it would be most appreciated.  To encourage you to respond as soon as possible we will hold a raffle for some fabulous prizes.  Check your snail mail for all the details.

We are grateful for your support of this important alcohol and drug free activity that keeps our children safe.  Thank you for making the Post Prom a special event for your boys.

May you enjoy a blessed Thanksgiving celebration with family and friends as we share God’s bountiful gifts of the season.
